Environment, Building & Public Policy

The environment needs protection

Clean water, intact ecological systems, a good climate and clear air are important basic necessities in life. We want to maintain and strengthen the ecological system in the Ammerland not only within the scope of the legal obligations placed upon us but also by practicing environmental protection.

At the same time, a balance has to be found between agricultural and forestry interests, well-regulated surface drainage and flood protection, and ecological aims and ideals. This is only possible if everyone remains open to each other, if everyone speaks to each other and if everyone pulls together.

An excellent example of a cooperation project for the protection of this natural environment is the Aper Tief dyke removal, which was successfully completed under the direction of the Leda-Jümme-Verband and the Ammerländer Wasseracht in cooperation with the local district of Ammerland.

Aper Tief
There were many challenges. Ultimately it was possible to bring together all the agencies involved: flood protection, dyke security, environmental protection and urban water management. The dyke removal project "Aper Tief" started in 2000 with an initial plan and meetings, and was completed in November 2005. Overall €2.9 million were raised and invested. The Hengstforde dyke removal project is a successful example of interdisciplinary cooperation, which also serves as a model with respect to the aims of the Water Framework Directive. It is an important stepping stone for flood protection in the Aper Tief water system.
