A look at Ammerland
The beautiful Ammerland (more on this at Ammerland-Tourism) lies north-west of Oldenburg, in the heart of the North-western German Plain between the Weser and Ems rivers. Cyclists love the flat, lightly trafficked cycle paths that pass through the wonderful countryside. Moors, marshes and coastal moorlands form a unique mosaic. In the middle of this is the Zwischenahner Lake, the third largest inland body of water in Lower Saxony.
An abundance of parks and gardens, rhododendron parks and tree nurseries characterise the idyllic landscape. Some of the rhododendron parks have been family-owned for more than 100 years. The Park der Gärten in Rostrup provides a fantastic natural display in this park landscape. Here, in the grounds of the State Garden Show 2002, there are more than 90 professionally designed themed gardens.
The region offers art and culture with many museums, concerts, readings, lectures, exhibitions and theatrical and cabaret performances. The former residence of the ruler, Rastede is known for its equestrian events and its medieval market. A good introduction to the local cultural scene can be obtained at the "View of Ammerland" exhibition at the Palais Rastede, which reveals the art, culture and history of the Ammerland.
It is particularly relaxing and well worth discovering the Ammerland on bicycle. In the bracing climate of the nearby North Sea, the 160 kilometre long Ammerland route takes you around the region in a loop. The flat route, which has very little traffic, passes huts, where you can take shelter, and information boards. Five look-out points along the route - windows onto the landscape - are dedicated to windmills, marshland, rhododendrons, hedge banks and water.
